Shockwave Wins Big Over Rage, 46-0
The Portland Shockwave made the long trek to sunny Redding, California this past weekend to play against the Redding Rage.
The coin toss had Portland kicking off to Redding . The Rage took possession of the ball on their own 45-yard line and due to a very shaky start by the Portland defense, worked the ball all the way inside the Shockwave 10-yard line. With 4th and goal to go, the Shockwave defense dug in and a touchdown saving tackle by Veronica Ferguson finally got things in motion for Portland.
Despite the fact that first-string quarterback for the Portland Shockwave, Bonny Elder , was out of the game due to an injury, the Shockwave offense took the field and turned the game around. Back-up quarterback, Megan Vanden Berg took charge from the very start. No jitters here. Vanden Berg started the Shockwave’s first possession from their own 2 yard line. A couple great runs by Rebecca Dawson set-up a beautiful 45-yard touchdown pass to Lisa Lum. Place kicker, Frankie Hymas sent the point after attempt sailing through the uprights. Vanden Berg was not only on fire in the air but ran the ball for 1 touchdown on 4 carries for 21 yards. She was 7 for 11 passes for 119 yards, with no interceptions and 4 touchdown passes. Vanden Berg’s other TD passes went to Desiree Barcroft, Dawson and a second one to Lum. Ferguson also ran in one touchdown.
Defensively, Portland was able to shut out the Rage. Ferguson, Lum and rookie Shannon Wilson all had defensive sacks. Dawson and Rebecca Brisson each forced a fumble and one resulted in a turnover. Darlene "Blue" Hall had some spectacular solo tackles on special teams and led the team in tackles (11). The defensively line was outstanding in their penetration and pressure applied only allowing 129 total yards.
To everyone’s horror Rage player Tina Struble (#42) went down five minutes into the fourth quarter. The field was silent as the medics carried her off the field and rushed her to the hospital. Thankfully word came later that evening that Struble was in good health and was released late that night. Despite that fact that the mood of the game was dim from this point on, both teams performed well and the game ended with a 46-0 Shockwave win.
Coaches awarded winning game balls to Megan Vanden Berg for stepping up and excelling as quarterback in Elder’s absence and Veronica Ferguson for playing an amazing defensive game.
The Shockwave will face the Rage twice more this season, conquering the long haul to Redding again on June 9th and then returning the hospitality here in Vancouver the following weekend. But first, come support the Portland Shockwave in their return home to McKenzie Stadium this Saturday, May 26th, where they will face off against the Corvallis Pride. Anyone with Military ID or anyone who brings 2 non-perishable items will receive $2 off their admission. All non-perishable items will go into care packages for our troops. Please note kickoff for the remainder of the home season will be at 6:00pm

Shockwave Defeats Pride, 28-7
The Portland Shockwave traveled to Corvallis, Oregon to take on inter-state rival Corvallis Pride this past Saturday (May 12, 2007).
After opening game formalities, the Pride kicked off to the Shockwave. This opening series by the Shockwave climaxed in a touchdown being scored by Rebecca Dawson and set the offensive pace for the game.
Defensively, Portland was on fire. Regardless of what the Pride ran, the defensive line and secondary continued to shut them down, including three interceptions by Megan Vanden Berg.
With eight minutes left in the second quarter, a look at the scoreboard showed Portland leading the game 21-0 thanks to two more touchdowns being scored by Bonny Elder and Vanden Berg. Kicker, Aundrea "Frankie" Hymas, was spot on with her extra point attempts going three for three.
The Pride continued to struggle against the Shockwave defense and continually found themselves pinned back far from a first down, facing things like third and twenty or second and fifteen. The Pride was unsuccessful in even crossing the 50-yard line into Shockwave territory.
After halftime, the game continued with great intensity. The Pride was finally able to gain some yardage on offense and even forced the Shockwave to punt for the first time in the game. In the third quarter, Corvallis intercepted a pass and ran it down to the Shockwave's 1-yard line. Portland's defense stepped in and dug in for a goal line stand - but was unsuccessful in holding to the Pride to zero points. Making the score 21 - 7. Despite this score against them, Portland continued to control the tempo of the game.
Lisa Lum of Portland went on to score the fourth and final Shockwave touchdown. Hymas' PAT attempt was a little wide, but the football gods were with her as the ball hit the upright and bounced in the right direction - in - making the score 28-7.
With eleven seconds left on the clock in the fourth quarter, the Pride made one final run at the end zone. The Shockwave watched as the scoreboard ticked to zero and right as the horn blew to signal game's end - yellow flags flew from the referees. It was a defensive penalty, giving Corvallis one last shot. With zero seconds on the board, the Shockwave defense remained tenacious and prevented the Pride from reaching the end zone. Game over!!!! Portland wins 28-7 over the Corvallis Pride.
The coaches awarded the Most Valuable Player game balls to Megan Vanden Burg for her playmaking defensive game and Rebecca Dawson for her stellar offensive game. The coaches also gave accolades to the offensive and defensive lines for their outstanding performances.
May 19th the Shockwave will be in Redding, California to take on the Rage. The Shockwave return home on May 26th and will be facing the Corvallis Pride again.

The Shockwave fall in Season Opener
Saturday, April 28th the Portland Shockwave kicked off their 2007 season opener against the Seattle Majestics at McKenzie Stadium.
After paying homage to fellow teammate Samantha Arnold, who is currently serving in Iraq,

Aundrea "Frankie" Hymas got the game going with an onside kick to Seattle which the Majestics recovered.
First game jitters ran high for both teams as they were unsuccessful in converting their opening drives. Despite the efforts of the Shockwave defense, Seattle was first to settle into the game early in the first quarter on a 1-yard quarterback keeper that led to a touchdown by quarterback, Michel Volk. The Majestics' place kicker, Molly Seaver, was unable to convert for the extra point.
The game ebbed and flowed for both teams. The Shockwave and the Majestics both experienced turnovers due to fumbles and interceptions.
Seattle's passing game was stunted by the Shockwave defense. Volk was able to complete only four of eleven passes for a total of 26 yards. Portland's Megan Vanden Berg, was responsible for one interception. Candice Gage, Rebecca Brisson and Vanden Berg all had a hand in foiling passes thrown by Volk.
Portland players, Veronica Ferguson and Desiree Barcorft, each recovered a fumble. Heather White and Darleen "Blue" Hall led the Shockwave in tackles for the night. The Majestics' running game was harder for the Shockwave to shut down. Kamberly Warner, running back for Seattle, racked up 126 of the 186 yards rushing and was difficult to contain up the middle.
Portland's quarterback, Bonny Elder, was forced to quick action due to repeated blitzes by the Majestics' middle and outside linebackers - Kasey Rivas, Gail Pitman and Lisa Tavarez. This constant pressure held the Shockwave to 126 yards rushing. Rebecca Dawson, was second to Elder's 58 yards with 40 yards rushing. Antonia Mueller, Lisa Lum and Dawson all caught passes for a total of forty-two yards.
Seattle scored again in the third and fourth quarters - Seaver was only able to convert one of the extra points.
In the fourth quarter, the Shockwave contained Seattle within their own twenty-yard line and forced them to punt. The snap went long and high and out of the end zone resulting in an automatic two-point safety.
The final score was Portland Shockwave 2 - Seattle Majestics 19. Portland is on a bye week and will not play May 5th, but will resume play on May 12th in Corvallis, Oregon against the Corvallis Pride.
