Portland Shockwave's History

In September of 2001, two women from a small town in Washington heard about a women's tackle football team in Tacoma from a young man involved in semi-pro football.  After some research, these lifelong athletes found themselves wanting to try out a new sport in which they had never been involved simply for the challenge of it all.  They traveled to Tacoma and instantly fell in love with the idea of women playing tackle football, so much so that they wanted to take it to another level in their area.

From this the Portland Shockwave Full-Contact Women's Football Team was born.  It started with an idea, and has since grown to ful-fill the dreams of the up to 60 team players and innumerable ladies and fans who seek to be a part of those dreams, both now and in the future.  The drive to create a way for women who would have not been able to play tackle football before has created a stir in local, media, and sports communities alike.

The Shockwave's vision is simple yet precise:
"The Portland Shockwave seeks to maintain through the team sport of women's tackle football a level of professionalism, integrity, fundamentalism, and community spirit unmatched by its predecessors.  By representing women and their role in athletics in a positive light and giving back to and entertaining our communities and fans, the Shockwave will live up to its title as Portland's Premier Women's Full-Contact Football team."

This vision paves the way for the individuals that make The Portland Shockwave great.  This includes a dedicated staff of coaches, players, and owners.  Our coaching staff represents the highest level of football knowledge in the area, bringing experience from the pros and semi-pros alike to the field.  The players represent the area's most elite athletes, coming from various sporting backgrounds and areas, including top college athletes and Olympic contenders.  The Ownership Board consists of players with the business sense to take the team to the nationally recognized professional level.

These components together combine to create a well-oiled football machine.  That machine is now and will continue to be The Portland Shockwave - Portland's PREMIER Women's Full-Contact Football Team.
